Get More Turnout with These Exercises!

Monday, January 27, 2020

Oh, turnout. Or, as we like to refer to it: rotation. We can never seem to have enough of it, right? If you're like me and have trouble even finding the muscles to activate your rotation, I'm here to share some exercises that have helped me!

You can use a theraband to do these, but I recommend getting some nice resistance bands if you can! These thicker ones with no-slip grips from Arena Strength are great, as well as the Tone It Up resistance bands you can get at Target.

Working in the most efficient way, I'll take you through 10 modified barre exercises to get those rotation muscles firing so that next time you're in class it should be easier to activate them and get the most out of your class time!

Backstory: I peaked with my dancing when I was with a company at 17-18 years old. When our season ended, I was hitting 6 turns en pointe, my extension felt great, my jumps were high.

The minute I started dancing in college, it never felt the same. I got increasingly frustrated that I was regressing, partially because the dancing was not as rigorous as in a full time company. Knowing that my parents were not going to let me leave college and come back home to return to dancing professionally, I instead left dancing and concentrated on college.

I started dancing again, recreationally, once I graduated, and contemplated returning to the professional world. But, I was not in the shape I needed to be in to get a contract, having done nothing for more than 3 years. Plus, by this time, I was working almost full time, in graduate school, engaged and marrying my husband, and by 24, I had my son.

Once my son was born via c-section, my body has never quite been the same. I opened a studio when he was a toddler, but was primarily teaching and not dancing myself, so I created some bad habits and muscle imbalances (imagine hours a day of demonstrating only one side - even though teacher training warned us about this!). I injured my left hip, and was in pain because of it for years after, which also created more imbalances because of compensating.

When we moved again, I was able to dance more full time for a while, but by this time, my muscular structure was totally off. My hips were constantly tilted forward, and my leg muscles very obviously showed all my imbalances. I went to my chiropractor at one point, and he said, "I don't want to overstep, because I know you know more about ballet than I do, but to me, your muscles are completely off. You are overbuilt in areas where you shouldn't be, and not using muscles you should be." And he could see this just from how I walked around!

The next few years, I was also limited in how much I could dance, I was taking care of my sick parents, and I used the time to really start to condition in ways to try to correct things. I did pilates regularly, and was constantly looking online for exercises to help me.

Last year, my son started training at a Cuban school, and I started taking a couple of times a week there. The teacher did not let me get away with anything! And while they focus on turnout, it's not in a way that only forces the ankles. They really emphasize the use of the hamstrings and glutes, and this has changed so much for me. I am still in class with her regularly, and this is one reason I am so sure that my son is the perfect place to train! She is helping me hold my turnout and alignment properly for the first time since I was 18 years old.

In trying to work in between classes to get the correct muscles firing so they would be stronger in class, I started experimenting with loop bands. That's how this workout was born! I feel like this is one of the best conditioning workouts to give automatic feedback in the next class, because you will feel the engagement of the muscles needed for more turnout and rotation - in a correct and safe way!

Are you guys ready for a crazy combo?! My teacher, Alvin, is known for his complicated combinations, so I asked him to come up with a really crazy petit allegro combo (my weakness, haha) to share as a challenge with you all! We filmed it after class last week and I learned the combo right there on camera. Follow along as you watch me work through it - do I master it or is it a flop?! OOh, watch to find out :)

30 Minute Ballet Barre

Sunday, July 16, 2017

We have a new follow-along ballet barre video! This one takes about 30 minutes to do and is considered a "warm up barre" to prepare you before a performance. This is also nice to do at home when you need a workout, but don't have a whole lot of time to dedicate to class. Abby explains more about this type of barre:

"A warm up class is going to differ from a typical class in a few ways. When trying to get ready for stage, you need to be extra efficient. Every combination needs to do as much as it can to get every part of the body moving. For me, a typical class will have a theme (maybe working on retire position at barre, then carrying that into turns and pas de chats in the center). In this type of class, I focus on certain muscle groups throughout the whole class in the hopes of making my students feel those muscles the next day (they love me for that, right?). I build my warm up classes, however, to be athletic and to work as many muscles groups as possible throughout the entire class. There is extra stretching and extra balances."

I really love this barre for working at home because it allows me to concentrate on placement and muscle usage. It's also helpful to do every few weeks so I can gauge my progress with stability and balances. I can tell if I'm improving in weak areas when I come back to this and it's either easier or harder. I also love that I get in a good sweat in a short amount of time while not skipping anything important about barre.

Everyone give Abby a big "Thank you!" for the combinations and we also want to thank Sarah Lund for providing the wonderful ballet class music!!

Let us know what you think of this one in the comments here or on YouTube!

Get Your Stretch On

Saturday, May 27, 2017

I am actively working on getting myself back in shape, and I am finally ready to make stretching a priority again. I'm also trying to find resources for my son so he can work on his flexibility this summer before attending his first pre-professional summer intensive at Ballet Austin.

I have been scouring youtube looking at different stretching videos, just because it's always fun to have a new routine or to find some advice that is either new or a good reminder. Here are my top picks at the moment!

I love this little dancer. She has the sweetest voice to guide you through this stretching routine, and she is VERY flexible. Occasionally she makes note of how those of us doing the video probably won't be able to go as far as she can, which is a huge understatement! I really like her sequence, and how she starts with basic neck and upper body stretches. You don't go into the splits until last, and I really like her tip for keeping square in your splits!

I recently discovered Stacey Nemour - a flexibility expert. She has DVDs out, and even a new online course you could splurge for if you had the money for it. The videos that are already up of her on youtube give you some good things you can incorporate into your stretching routine.

I like this video because I love combining the stretching with the weights so you are gaining flexibility and strength at the same time - so important!

I really like this video for hip flexibility, especially her point about not trying to push down on your knees in the butterfly!!

Excellent point about flexing in your stretches, that can be incorporated into almost any stretch you do!

And lastly, here's a 10 Day Flexibility Challenge playlist. I love things that encourage us to commit for an extended length of time, especially with something like stretching that requires daily work to make improvement.

If you're looking to vamp up your stretching this summer, I hope some of these resources help you! Post your favorite stretching resources below!

This past week I hosted professional ballet dancer Brittany Cavaco while she was in town. I met Brittany last summer in Washington, D.C. when we got together to do a photo shoot! Her visit was a short two nights, but it was great to have some dancer slumber parties! :) I vlogged one of the days and she shared a really great pilates exercise to help with my knees. She also went to class with me and Kristin that night and I got TWO fouetté turns in a row, guys! Small progress, but progress! Watch it all in the vlog on our YouTube channel:

Basic Ballet Barre Video

Sunday, August 14, 2016

If you saw my Ballet Class When Traveling video you'll know that I started a new job at the beginning of this summer. I had to go out of town for two weeks to train and after getting home, my new schedule made it tough to make it to class on time. It had been about a month without class before I got back into the studio and, boy, did my body feel it. I consider myself an advanced adult ballet dancer and some of my classes are very fast paced and difficult. I love it, but coming back from some time off I felt like my body needed a minute to catch back up. I asked Abby about doing a super basic ballet barre to help get the muscles and placement going again and she filmed this fantastic ballet barre for everyone!

Abby and I are both very strong believers in going back to the basics at no matter what level you are. Everything you do in ballet builds off of the basics, which is a fantastic thing - no matter what happens, the basics are always there for you. So whether you are just starting ballet, starting back to ballet, coming back from time off or injury, or just want to slow things down, this video is here for you! Give it a "thumbs up" and leave a comment if you enjoy it! - Jana

Adult Ballet Barre Workout!

I finally got to visit Abby for a week recently (here's the video where we announced her move in 2013) and besides getting strep throat two days before I flew out (!!) it was such an amazing time! Though I love how easy it is to stay in touch with friends and family through the internet, there is nothing like some good quality face-to-face time.

We fortunately had access to the studio where Abby is teaching so we filmed some highly requested videos for you all! The first video being the most in-demand, an Adult Ballet Barre workout! It's follow along style so you can do it at home or on your own studio time. We hope you all enjoy it and can add it into your Kathryn Morgan 12 Week Challenge if you are doing that!

Coming up soon are some pointe videos and a fun little Q&A. Thank you guys for your lovely comments and for watching our channel!

New Video! Abby's Ab Workout!

Thursday, September 4, 2014

We are so excited to share this requested video with you all today! When Abby was my instructor, we would do an ab workout in between barre and center work. We all got such strong cores, which greatly improved our dancing and our overall quality of movement!

So, here it is for you to do too! Abby suggests doing the workout three times a week, and it's light enough to do daily once you get used to it.

The video is follow along style and has music included, but please feel free to mute it and play your own motivating jams! Enjoy! :)

Conditioning and Pilates

Hello everyone!

You may have seen a video I posted on the facebook page recently. It was a cardio workout video. The first time I did the workout, I really loved it. It burned a lot of calories, was good cardio, and was something really easy to do at home in an apartment living room.

The problem was, when I walked into ballet class the week I was doing that workout, I was totally off. My turns weren't working, and I just didn't feel together. Oh, and my hips, which I have chronic problems with anyway, were just killing me. The only explanation I could come up with was the new workout. It was the only thing I changed.

In terms of looking for a workout for my days off from class, I was back to square one. For me, that means back to pilates. Pilates supports my dancing in such amazing ways. When it is added to my routine, I feel so much more centered in class. It helps me feel more controlled, and to really be able to let go because I'm not struggling to find my core.

This book is such an excellent resource, taking you through many different pilates exercises individually.  It has pictures to show you what to do, with written explanations telling you when to breath, and extra tips for things to think about. I could design many different workouts from this one book.
It can be found on Amazon here.

Another really good resource is Fitness Blender on youtube. They have workouts of all kinds, including many pilates workouts. So, if you prefer a video you can put on and follow someone, they will have something for you.

Here is my current favorite pilates video from them:

And here is a video from Jana and me where we talked about conditioning:

What kind of conditioning do you like? If you add in some pilates, let me know if you can feel the difference in ballet class!

Giving yourself class!

Hello everyone!

One thing we get a LOT of requests for here at Ballerinas By Night is help with class! People want to give themselves class at home, but need new ideas. Since I have just finished up performing in the Nutcracker recently, I also saw many people wishing they had more ideas for giving themselves a warm up class.

A warm up class is going to differ from a typical class in a few ways. There is extra stretching and extra balances.

This class is an adapted version of what I have been teaching recently, and can also be used as a home class/workout. Of course, you can and should adapt it to your own needs. I highly suggest using music, and we even gave you some music suggestions for classes at home (remember that?).

First, I want to talk about the order of ballet class. If you get some ballet music, you will automatically have an order to your class if you just follow along with the CD. But, different styles will do certain exercises at different times, so if you are used to something else, of course customize to your own needs.

My preferred order is:

  1. Plies
  2. Tendus from 1st
  3. Tendus from 5th (If I am in a time crunch, I only do one tendu combination, but I prefer two.)
  4. Degages from 1st
  5. Degages from 5th (Same holds true for degage - can be combined into one combination.)
  6. Rond de jambe a terre
  7. Frappe
  8. Fondu (Again, I prefer to have one frappe and one fondu combination, but they can combined or switched out if you are short on time.)
  9. Adagio/stretch (I prefer to have a short adagio that continues into stretching, but this is another one of those that could be split up into two completely different parts, or adagio at barre could be skipped completely. If I know I am going to do an involved adagio in the center, I don't always do one at barre. Either way, I suggest stretching before grand battement.)
  10. Grand battement

Note: there are several other barre exercises that could be included, such as rond de jambe en l'air and petite battement, among others. I'm not going to address those in this blog post, but just know that this list is not 100% comprehensive.

Another note for the following: There are many different ways to write down and explain the steps for a combination, and many times the same step has several different terms that can be used to say the same thing. It doesn't mean that someone is wrong because they do or say something differently (this is so important). I find writing down steps like this extremely time consuming and frustrating, so I'm not going for perfection in how this is written out. Feel free to comment with any questions or if you need clarifications, however! I'm also not putting in counts for everything because in most cases it should be self-explanatory or open to interpretation. :-)

BARRE

Plies
Two demis, one grand. Forward bend, releve. Change position. Repeat in 2nd and 5th (no fourth). After 5th, tendu back to first, turn in and take 8 counts to stretch foward. Bend the knees, walk out and back, or whatever else you need. Roll up, reverse the arm stretching back. Plie, releve and balance.

Tendus from 5th (or could be done from 1st and repeated from 5th)
Tendu, plie, tendu, close. Front, pass back, pass front, close. Side close back, side close front (2 counts each), 4 tendus in 1 count closing 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th back. Repeat from the back. Balance sous-sus.

Degage from 5th (again, could be adapted to go from 1st as well)
Degage, plie, degage, plie. Out, pique, pique (SHARP), close 5th. Repeat side and inside leg front. Plie passe in four counts, two times. Stay in the last passe and balance retire.

Rond de jambe
4, two counts each. 4, one count each. 1 en lair in four counts. En dehors, en dedans. Circular bend, and reverse it. Take time here for whatever you need - lunge, etc. Take a balance. If you are still working on a good retire position, this is the time to face the barre and to check yourself. Only balance if you can maintain placement, otherwise just work on training the proper position with hands still on the barre. If you are more advanced, take an arabesque or attitude balance.

Frappe
4 in two counts each - front, side, back. Two double frappe side in two counts each, four counts of petite battement. Repeat from the back. Optional: repeat on releve.

Fondu
2 fondus in two counts each, 1 fondu releve, hold count 7, sous-sus count 8. En croix. Foot in hand stretch four counts front, carry side, let go and hold. Repeat. Hand in knee for attitude to the back, stretch as you need. Balance in arabesque, brush through to close fifth front.

Stretch

Grand battement
3 grand battement (2 counts each), plie stretch. Front, back, side. Six attitude swings starting from the back, ending to close front. Or, you could do seven, close back, and repeat from the back.

CENTER

Adagio
Rond de jambe front and carry back, on the fondu front and carry back, degage en lair (brush front to ninety degrees) on 5, 6, 7, close 8. Developpe side in four counts, fouette to third arabesque, hold, pas de bourree. Grand plie (four counts), carry the arms to fifth en haut and open, counts 5-8. Tombe pas de bourree (1-2), passe (3-4), passe (5-6), sous-sus 7, plie 8, prepare for left side.

Pirouette (this is a good combination for home use because it doesn't take up much room!)
Step up to sous-sus (1), plie (2), push to retire balance (3), plie (4), sous-sus (5), plie (6), pirouette (7), end with the leg extended a la seconde on the fondu (8), soutenu (1-2), tendu side (3), carry to tendu back (4), outside pirouette (5-6), finish (7), tendu back to fifth on 8 so you can go left.

First jumps
8 jumps in first, 4 jumps in second, 4 changement. Repeat left.

Basic petite allegro
Glissade jete, glissade jete, glissade assemble, glissade assemble. Three pas de chats, pas de bourree, three entrechat quatre, hold on 8.

Enjoy your class!
